One of the most positive trends over the years has been the recognition of the problems faced by those struggling with drug addiction. There was a time when a substance abuse issue was considered a moral failing, rather than a symptom of a complicated condition. But even today, there are still some misconceptions about the nature of addiction.

One of the first clues that addiction is not simply a matter of choice is that an addicted person will continue to use drugs in spite of experiencing consistently negative consequences. The fact is, a person in the throes of addiction is unable to abstain on a consistent basis.

This inability to abstain is due to an insatiable craving for drugs caused by a chemical alteration of the brain’s reward system. As a result, an addict is less able to control his or her behavior. The brain’s hunger for drugs becomes so strong that an addict cannot make the rational decision to stop using.

The power of addiction is often so strong that addicts sacrifice their relationships, jobs and other important things just to maintain a habit. And eventually, an addict’s impaired judgment could lead to an arrest for possession.

If you have been charged with possession of a controlled substance, you have good reason to be scared for your future. But depending on your circumstances, you may be able to avoid incarceration in favor of a more positive form of legal requirement.

For instance, you may be able to enter a drug rehabilitation program. But regardless of your situation, it is important to have an experienced criminal defense attorney on your side who can see that your rights are protected and can work to help you get your best possible outcome.
