Although it is a hobby enjoyed by many people, hunting is strictly regulated in Louisiana. Hunting animals outside of specific seasons can lead to serious charges that require a vigorous criminal defense. This may be the case for an area man who was recently charged for illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and for taking a bear during a closed season.
Back in Nov. 2017, agents from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries discovered a black bear that appeared to be dead. Upon closer inspection, the agent determined that the black bear had been shot and died as a result. A subsequent necropsy determined that the bear suffered two gunshot wounds only days before it was discovered by agents.
Agents increased patrols around the area where they found the dead bear, apparently hoping that the person responsible would return. Patrolling agents came across the same 28-year-old man twice, once on Dec. 29, 2017 and Jan. 4, 2018. When questioned about the bear’s death, he allegedly admitted to shooting the animal. He was also hunting at the time he was detained for questioning.
The hunter is facing charges for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and illegally killing the Louisiana Black Bear. Combined, these charges could net him over 20 years in prison and nearly $16,000 in related fines and civil restitution. For most people, timely action regarding their criminal defense planning is essential, as this allows for adequate time to review all charges and related evidence that may help lead to the best possible outcome.
